Icons of Horror
Freddy Krueger, Pennywise, Billy the Puppet, Ghostface, Michael Meyers, Jason Vorhees
This personal project has had quite a few updates.
The project started in 2021 when I wanted to challenge myself to paint with acrylics. I had some 3.5"x 3.5" watercolor tiles, which I figured would be quick to paint due to their tiny size. Now for the subject matter.
Well of course, why not go with one of my favorite subjects, horror movies!
My first attempt was Ghostface, which was not...bad, but certainly more cartoony that I had hoped.
After that first attempt, I realized that I needed to sketch the image first to make sure I had the proportions right, so I used a watercolor pencil to get the sketch down first and then painted on top with acrylics.
This layering technique added such a lovely depth to the whites- giving a slightly colder blue color, instead of just the white acrylic.
Completed Illustrations
In 2023, once I discovered my love for motion design and animation, I decided to revisit my icons of horror and animate them. This was delightful! I mixed together each audio clip and tried to craft a story with the animation.
I'm particularly fond of the Ghostface animation because it was my first attempt to make a blood splatter on his mask-similarly to my original painting. This was actually a blue watercolor texture that I changed the hue to red and then animated on top! Cool, right?
